The Year of Lafayette in New York

  • January 22 : Lunch to present the 2007 Year of Lafayette organized by the Lafayette Center at the University of Louisiana.
  • March 9: Public lecture delivered by Gonzagues Saint-Bris on the subject of Lafayette on March 8 th or 9 th at the Lycée français de New York.
  • May 23: Public lecture given by the President of the French-American Foundation, Nicholas W. F-R. Dungan on “The Legacy of Lafayette and Lessons for the French-American Relationship: Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of the Marquis de Lafayette ” at the New York Historical Society.
  • November 2007: Exhibition on Lafayette organized by the French-American Foundation.
  • Lafayette College in Pennsylvania

    Lafayette College is planning a yearlong celebration of the life and legacy of the man for whom it is named, the Marquis de Lafayette, in observance of the 250th anniversary of the Marquis' birth on Sept. 6, 1757.

    The highlights of the year-long celebration are:

  • Lives of Liberty lecture series - 6 speakers throughout the year, including Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough on September 5.

  • The exhibit A Son and his Adoptive Father: The Marquis de Lafayette and George Washington currently at Mt. Vernon and on view at the College Sept. 6- Oct. 28, 2007. In partnership with Lafayette and with more than 60 items on loan from the College, the exhibition focuses on the close "father-son" relationship between the Marquis de Lafayette and George Washington.

  • The birthday celebration on Sept. 6th: Festivities include the dedication of a Pennsylvania historical marker to commemorate the College founding meeting held in December 1824, an all-College dinner on the Quad, an encampment by Revolutionary War reenactors, the arrival by carriage of the Marquis de Lafayette, carriage rides around the Quad, music and dance, and much more. Headlining the event will be Lloyd Kramer, award-winning author of Lafayette in Two Worlds: Public Cultures and Personal Identities in an Age of Revolution.
