Statement on Iran by Philippe Douste-Blazy, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Paris, August 31, 2006

I deplore Iran’s unsatisfactory response to the ambitious negotiation proposals which the Six made to her. I
nonetheless remain convinced that priority must still be given to the path of dialogue, as President Chirac has said.
In this respect, I regret that a meeting between Messrs Solana and Larijani could not take place before 31 August.

In accordance with UNSCR 1696, the IAEA Director General has just presented the report on Iran’s implementation of
the demands made to her by the IAEA and United Nations Security Council. We are studying its content, but, on its first
reading, the conclusions seem to confirm our own assessment of Iran’s response.

Over the coming week, we shall consult with our partners to look at what steps are called for with respect to Iran’s
attitude, on the basis of UNSCR 1696./."
