France/South Korea
Statements made by Dominique de Villepin, Prime Minister, during his joint press briefing with Mrs Han Myung-Sook, Prime Minister of South Korea, (excerpts)
Paris, June 8, 2006
(…) Q. – I'd also like to ask you a question on North Korea. President Kim Dae-jung will very soon be going to North Korea, and I believe that through such visits the relationship between North and South Korea will get better and better. And in this respect, I'd like to know what France's position is on her relationship with North Korea.
THE PRIME MINISTER – As you know, we have no diplomatic relationship because we've always called for a number of preconditions to be satisfied, as regards non-proliferation, the opening-up of the country and greater democracy. What we want, of course, is to be able to contribute to the stability of the region and so move towards diplomatic relations. I believe that if relations between North and South Korea – if the dialogue with the Six can be resumed, and we want this dialogue to resume and be stepped up, the conditions will very probably be met for us to take a step in that direction… ./.
