Visit to Italy - Interview given by Mme Catherine Colonna, Minister Delegate for European Affairs, to France Inter, (excerpts)

Rome, February 16, 2006

Q. – Should we be pleased about an opening-up of the European market for services? (…)

THE MINISTER – Our economy, which is a services economy, has everything to gain from an opening-up of the European market for services. France is a major exporter of services, the third largest in Europe. Quite simply, this is where tomorrow's jobs will be. I'd like to salute the work done by the European Parliament: European democracy has functioned well. Today we have a large majority for a text which will allow us to move forward and create more economic activity and more jobs, while fully respecting the European Union's social imperatives. The country of origin principle no longer exists: French labour law will apply in France, public services will be safeguarded. It's very good news./.
