Letter of condolence from Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, to Shaikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, Prime Minister of Kuwait, following the death of the Emir of Kuwait
Paris, January 15, 2006
Prime Minister, I was shocked to learn of the death of His Highness Shaikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Emir of Kuwait. In these painful circumstances, I extend to You my heartfelt condolences and share the grief of the whole Kuwaiti nation. Kuwait has lost a Statesman who has marked the development of Your country, during both its most prosperous periods and most difficult days. Throughout his reign, Shaikh Jaber consolidated Kuwait's institutions and guaranteed freedom of expression to her national representatives. Under his strong impetus, the Kuwaiti parliament adopted decisive reforms, thus perpetuating this institution's pioneer role in the region. Shaikh Jaber also made a decisive contribution to developing our bilateral relations, to which he attached particular importance. Kuwait knows that she can count, under all circumstances and in a regional environment necessitating constant vigilance, on France's sincere friendship and support. As you know, France played her part in the events which led in 1991 to the restoration of the Kuwaiti State's sovereignty. Our defence agreement is the guarantee of our loyalty and our commitment to safeguarding the Emirate's stability, independence and prosperity. I know the value you attach to deepening the exceptional relationship built between our two countries. France for her part will ensure this. Let me reiterate my sincere feelings of friendship and compassion. (complimentary close, with handwritten addition)./.
