Iran nuclear issue
Statement of the French Foreign minister, Philippe Douste Blazy. New York, May 8, 2006 It’s the third time this year that my colleagues and I meet on the question of Iran. We met in London at the end of January, and in Berlin in March. We meet again today in New York to go on our concertation. We took stock of the situation. Mr El Baradei submitted its report 10 days ago to the Security Council. Iran did not respond to the requests of the international community. On the contrary, it accelerated its enrichment program. We all agree today that this attitude creates a situation which is worrying for the whole international community. Tonight, we all agreed that what we want is straightforward suspension of the sensitive nuclear activities of Iran. The discussion tonight was on the way of including this requirement into the resolution. We also discussed the way of presenting a set of both incentive and deterrent measures according to the Iranian response. France says that it is important that Iran be faced with its own choice. Iran has to bear its responsibilities and decide either that it will adopt a position of openness or then benefit of this with an ambitious program France says that it is important that Iran be faced with its own choice. Iran has to bear its responsibilities and decide either that it will adopt a position of openness and then benefit of this with an ambitious program in the field of civil nuclear technology, trade, and why not security. Or it is a closed attitude and then it will be a series of deterrent measures. We did not go into the detail of the text yet. We have entrusted or ambassadors and political directors to implement this question of the text./.
