Iran meeting
Statements made by M. Philippe Douste-Blazy, Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his joint press briefing with Mr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State, Mr Jack Straw, British Foreign Secretary, Mr Sergei Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Dai Bingguo, Chinese Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr Javier Solana, European Union Secretary-General and European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy.
Berlin, March 30, 2006 I'd simply like to say that Mr ElBaradei's report shows something important: Iran hasn't complied with the International Atomic Energy Agency's demands and doubts persist on the actual nature of the Iranian nuclear programme. Ever since this report was presented to the United Nations Security Council, the international community has been unanimous. Today we have talked about the path we must take together, about these 30 days when the responsibility now lies with the Iranians. So what are we asking, what path should be followed? (…) We agree – everyone around the table said this – with Iran's pursuit of nuclear activities for civilian purposes. But we are also asking for a complete suspension of sensitive nuclear activities, including for research and development, and for this suspension to be verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency. This is the demand the Agency has made to Iran and we agree with the Security Council supporting with its political authority this demand for a complete suspension, which is the prerequisite for any solution. I shall conclude on the method. The method is simple: the pursuit by the international community of a firm and united course of action. I repeat, we shall do this firmly./.
