UN Summit

Statement to the press by Philippe Douste-Blazy, Minister of Foreign Affairs, following his speech to the United Nations General Assembly (excerpts)

New York, September 18, 2005

LEBANON

Q. – What are you expecting from tomorrow’s meeting of the Core Group on Lebanon?

THE MINISTER – Firstly, I’m pleased to be participating in this meeting where there will also be Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Russia and Italy. Having seen the Lebanese Prime Minister yesterday, this will be the opportunity to ask the international community to help Lebanon, who is currently carrying out important structural economic, budgetary and also political reforms.

IRAQ

(...) We believe in Iraq’s political process. For us it’s the only solution for maintaining Iraq’s cohesion and preventing any partition. Quite obviously, if the security problems are resolved, France is ready to participate in Iraq’s reconstruction, to participate in the training of Iraqi civil servants. France will be at the Iraqis’ side here./.
