Letter of congratulations from Jacques Chirac, President of Republic, to Viktor Yushchenko, on his election as President of Ukraine
Paris, January 6, 2005
President Yushchenko, It gives me great pleasure to extend to you my warmest and most sincere congratulations on your election as Ukrainian Head of State. Going beyond your personal victory, I salute a victory for democracy and the rule of law, in accordance with the deep-rooted aspirations expressed peacefully, but forcefully, by the Ukrainian people over the past few weeks. I pay tribute to your courage and determination, which enabled you to get through the ordeals and made this victory possible. Rest assured that France is aware of the import of the 26 December poll for Ukraine and for Europe. My wish is that it may contribute to strengthening still further the bonds between all our continent's peoples. I also take this opportunity to thank you for being kind enough to send me your good wishes on the eve of the new year. I, in turn, wish you, your loved-ones and all the Ukrainians success and prosperity. (complimentary close) [handwritten:] Kindest regards./.
