Paris, January 7, 2005

President Berlusconi, [handwritten:] Dear Silvio,

I was shocked to learn of the terrible train accident which occured near Bologna and has just plunged Italy into mourning.

In these painful circumstances, I want to extend to you, personally and on behalf of the French people, my heartfelt condolences during this ordeal.

Please would you be kind enough to convey my deepest sympathy to the bereaved families.

(complimentary close) [handwritten:] and assuring you of my solidarity in this tragedy./.
