Iran/ Nuclear program

Statements made by Philippe Douste-Blazy, Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his meeting with the press following the informal meeting with Miguel Angel Moratinos, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs (excerpts)

Biarritz, August 9, 2005

Q. – Do you still have hopes for a settlement of the crisis with Iran?

THE MINISTER – The Germans, British and French have continued to the last minute to make proposals that would enable the Iranians to suspend their sensitive nuclear activities.

Until the last minute, France, with her partners, the United Kingdom, Germany and the High Representative of the European Union, hopes to have a positive and open discussion, based on dialogue and consultation in the field of nuclear proliferation. We think that it is still possible to negotiate so that the Iranians may be enabled to suspend their sensitive nuclear activities. Our hand is still outstretched.

Q. – Are you going to refer the matter to the United Nations Security Council?

THE MINISTER – The United Nations Security Council has not to be seized of this problem today, since it is first of all, and above all, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency that must express the wish of the international community vis-à-vis Iran; and we want to be able to have a negotiation with Iran.

We hope we shall be able to find a common solution to preserve the positive spirit of the Paris agreement, which may yet be saved./.
