2005 Nobel Peace Prize

Award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the International Atomic Energy Agency - Statement by Philippe Douste-Blazy, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Prague, October 7, 2005

I welcome the award of the Nobel Prize to the International Atomic Energy Agency. For its Director General, Mr Mohamed ElBaradei, it means recognition, encouragement and success. France reaffirms her constant support for the agency and its role in the multilateral system.

It’s an encouragement for multilateralism and for continuing to fight proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the world we live in today.

We believe it important, alongside the agency, to fight every form of weapons proliferation and particularly that of nuclear weapons. “Yes” to civilian nuclear power, “no” to nuclear proliferation for military purposes.

Finally, this is a personal success for a man of peace who is a great believer in objectivity and whose philosophy is transparency./.
