Desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Lyon’s seventh arrondissement – Communiqué issued by the Ministry of the Interior, Internal Security and Local Freedoms

Paris, August 10, 2004

Dominique de Villepin, Minister of the Interior, Internal Security and Local Freedoms, utterly condemns the desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Lyon’s seventh arrondissement, where 56 gravestones and a monument to those who died in the 1939-1945 war were defaced with inscriptions and graffiti.

He expresses his solidarity with the Jewish community affected by this new act of vandalism and has called for the police officers in charge of the investigation to pursue it until the perpetrators of this vile act are identified and brought to justice.

Forensic police have already begun a very thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators. Two suspects were questioned this evening and kept in police custody.

The public authorities and forces of law and order are, and will remain, unfailingly determined to fight every anti-Semitic act./.
