France/Middle East/Israel
Interview with Moshe Katsav, President of the State of Israel, in the French magazine Le Nouvel Observateur (excerpts)
Paris, February 12, 2004
Q: Your visit comes at a time when the press and certain Israeli politicians are denouncing the rise of anti-Semitism in France. What are your feelings on this point?
A: France isn’t anti-Semitic. But there are manifestations of anti-Semitism in France, as there are in other European countries, and that worries us all the more in that France, in our eyes, is the most democratic country, the one most attached to universal values. And someone who throws stones at a synagogue will someday throw stones at Parliament. Q: Is the French government reacting as it should against such actions or should it do more?
A: The French government has denounced these anti-Semitic acts, and we’re on the same wavelength with President Chirac in this regard. In fact, we will discuss the subject during my visit.
