Heightened security measures for the Jewish New Year (AFP)

Paris, September 13, 2004

Heightened security measures have been put in place for the Jewish New Year, which begins Wednesday evening [September 15], in view of the concern over the rise in anti-Semitism, said the president of the Consistory of Paris, Moïse Cohen.

"The state is putting in place heightened security measures to our great satisfaction," Mr. Cohen told AFP. "There were contacts at all levels--prefectures, the general councils and the Interior Ministry."

Mr. Cohen, accompanied by leaders of the Jewish organization, Jewish Community Protection Service (SCPJ), recently visited all the prefects in the Ile-de-France region to examine the measures to be taken.

According to Mr. Cohen, "Some prefectures requested reinforcements around synagogues, especially in Seine Saint-Denis and in the Val d'Oise," departments close to Paris. In Sarcelles, police officers will line some routes "considered at risk" to synagogues. (...)
