Prime Minister, [handwritten:]Dear Tony, The dreadful crime committed against Mrs Margaret Hassan, held hostage in Iraq since 19 October, deeply shocked me. Nothing can justify such barbarity. I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to convey to Mrs Hassan’s family my deepest and very sincere condolences. I also wanted, in such a cruel ordeal, to express to you my personal sympathy and the solidarity of the French with the British people.
