Anti-Semitism/Racism

Mayor of Paris asks for debate in schools on racism

Paris, August 24, 2004

The Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë, has asked primary and secondary school principals in Paris to "think about a particular initiative" to increase their students' awareness of the fight against anti-Semitism when the new term starts.

"Faced with the rise in anti-Semitic acts, concrete initiatives are required to promote collective awareness, and young people should be particularly involved," wrote Mr. Delanoé in a letter published Tuesday.

Referring to the first day of the school year as an "important moment," he suggested that school principals in Paris should, insofar as possible and without upsetting the school timetable, organize debates and explore ideas on the subject of anti-racism through a "civic and citizen's approach."
