Desecration of Muslim cemetery in Strasbourg - statement by President Jacques Chirac Read by Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin

Strasbourg, June 14, 2004

I am appalled and horrified to learn of the serious desecration of many Muslim graves in the cemetery of the Meinau district in Strasbourg.

In the name of all the French, I express my indignation at these intolerable acts which I condemn in the strongest possible terms.

I assure all the families concerned and also the entire Muslim community of France and its leaders of the nations complete solidarity.

I want to tell them the public authorities are absolutely determined relentlessly to pursue the perpetrators of these shameful acts so they are tried and sentenced with all the rigor of the laws of the Republic.

All these acts of hate, all these attacks, all these brutalities are contrary to our values, our principles and our ideals. They are unworthy of France. They will be fought with the utmost resolve. Tolerance is the cement of our national community. The future of our country is inconceivable without respect for the other./.
