Anti-Semitism/Racism

Anti-Semitism campaign to start in Paris, (AFP)

Paris, August 31, 2004

The campaign against anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination, announced August 23, kicks off Wednesday with posters appearing on the 1, 200 municipal notice-boards in Paris and advertisements in the national and Parisian press, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë announced in a communiqué today.

"Only the mobilization of everyone (...) regardless of age, origins and spiritual convictions will promote the values underlying our democratic life, which Paris fervently celebrated at the 60th anniversary of its liberation: solidarity and respect for the identity of each," the mayor said in a communiqué.

"In the present, particularly serious circumstances, the defense and reaffirmation of these ideals are more indispensable than ever," Mr. Delanoë stressed.

The mayor plans to propose at the next city council meeting on September 27 and 28 an increase in the budget earmarked for increased security at sensitive establishments./.
