POLISH REFERENDUM

Polish Referendum - Letter of congratulations from M. Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, to Mr Aleksander Kwasniewski, President of Poland

Paris, June 9, 2003

President Kwasniewski,

I want to send you my warmest congratulations on the success of the referendum which has confirmed the wide support of the Polish people for your country's accession to the European Union.

I know the extent to which this result is the fruit of the efforts expended for years by the Polish authorities and people in order to rejoin the European family, and how much it is due to your determined commitment to bring Poland closer to the EU.

We now have ahead of us the responsibility of building a stronger, more democratic and more efficient Europe. I am particularly pleased that this is now for us a wholly-shared responsibility. The friendship forged through the trials of history, which so deeply unites our two countries, will be of inestimable value in the realization of this shared ambition.

You may rest assured that France is and will be at Poland's side in the new, reunited Europe.

(complimentary close)./.
