Statement to the press by Jacques Chirac, President of the Republic, following his meeting with Kofi Annan, United Nations Secretary-General

Athens, April 17, 2003

As we have always said, France wants the UN to play a central role both in the follow-up to the Iraq question and in the framework of the stability which needs to be restored in the region. True to her principles, France will naturally approach these questions in a pragmatic fashion and case by case. This is what we talked about with the Secretary-General. And, finally, I indicated to the UN Secretary-General that France would support his efforts to the full extent of her possibilities.

(…)

How is France going to work with what you call the occupation forces, the American and British forces?

In the way that will be defined and decided upon by the UN.

What is your reaction to the arrest in Baghdad of Abu Abbas, and do you think it is proof of the link between Saddam Hussein’s regime and terrorism?

I think that whatever happens, the nature of the deeds, which are perfectly well remembered, warrants justice being done. And severely.

What do you think of the United States’ desire to lift the sanctions against the Baghdad regime?

We think the lifting of the sanctions is an objective to which we have long since subscribed. Now, it is for the UN, naturally, to define the modalities of the lifting of sanctions./.
