YEMEN / EXPLOSION ON BOARD AN OIL TANKER

Communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (excerpts)

Paris, October 10, 2002

The initial results of the investigation, launched by French, Yemeni and American investigators, indicate that the explosion which occurred on the “Limburg” French supertanker on 6 October may have been due to a terrorist attack.

The next stage of the investigation will make it possible to verify these initial results and determine the exact causes of the explosion. The Minister of Foreign Affairs has asked our embassies and consulates in the areas at risk to step up security and protection measures for the French communities and redouble vigilance. Finally, under the aegis of the Secrétariat général de la mer [Marine Affairs Secretariat-General], the French Navy and French shipowners are looking at what can be done to increase security for merchant ships in these areas at risk./.
