French German Relations

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson (excerpts)

Paris, September 25, 2002

At the last meeting between the president and German chancellor, on September 7 in Hanover, the president reaffirmed our resolve to give a boost to the Franco-German dynamic for the 40th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty.

This will be based in particular on the measures that were announced at the most recent Franco-German summit in Schwerin such as the establishment of working groups and an increase in the number of bilateral meetings in the context of the Blaesheim process which will in future be held every month.

How do you explain the fact that Gerhard Schröder's first visit, after being re-elected, was to Britain and not France even though the two countries are preparing to celebrate the Elysée Treaty?

I repeat that Franco-German meetings, at all levels, are frequent and regular, especially in the context of preparing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty.

It was decided at the last Franco-German summit in Schwerin, on July 30, that the meetings in the so-called Blaesheim process, which bring together the German chancellor and the president, accompanied by two foreign ministers, will be held every month in future The last meeting in this framework took place in Hanover on September 7. So the next one is due to be held in France.
