Daily Press Briefing Statements made by [Please note that only the original French text issued by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs may be considered official.] UNITED STATES/FRANCE/IRAQ
Q - Can you confirm that the United States has asked France to take in members of the People’s Mujahadeen, grouped at a camp at Asraf in Iraq, as today’s Le Figaro asserts?
The People’s Mujahadeen Organization of Iran, is listed as a terrorist organization in both the United States and the European Union.
In any event we make a point of respecting international, European and national law.
Q - But did Washington ask you or not? Also, as you said recently in regard to the FARC, the fact that a group is on the list of terrorist organizations doesn’t in any way prevent France from taking in its members.
I’ve no information about such a request.
I’ll add to what I just said that the PMOI is the subject of judicial proceedings in France for conspiracy with a view to a terrorist undertaking. So it would be up to the judicial authorities to make a decision on individual cases if need be.
CHAD/PASCAL MARLINGE’S ASSASSINATION
Q - Have you had any new information from the Chadian authorities about the inquiry into the assassination of Pascal Marlinge of “Save the Children”?
We’ve been in close contact with the Chadian authorities since Pascal Marligne’s assassination. We are confident that there will be a full investigation and we’ll certainly keep you informed.
Q - What is France’s position on the situation in Zimbabwe at this time?
We have taken note of the announcement about the second round in the presidential elections. We hope that the campaign and the voting take place in free and fair conditions under the supervision of international monitors.
We welcome the progress that has been made through the mediation of President Thabo Mbeki who's denounced the violence and plans to send a fact-finding mission to Zimbabwe./.
