(excerpts)

(Paris, May 15, 2008)

MIDDLE EAST

Q - Do you have any reaction to the rocket attack on Ashkelon in Israel? Do you attribute it to Hamas as the United States does?

France strongly condemns the continuing rocket fire on Israel from the Gaza Strip. On Friday May 9 and Monday May 12 these attacks claimed the lives of two Israeli civilians, one of whom was a 70-year-old woman, in the communities of Kfar Aza and Yesha, and seriously wounded over ten people this Wednesday, May 14, in Ashkelon.

France is extremely concerned about the situation in southern Israel and the Gaza Strip. It calls on all the parties to exercise the utmost restraint and end the violence.

With regard to your second question these rocket attacks are so far as we know the action of Palestinian radical movements.

Let me take this opportunity to say again that it is essential in the present situation to keep to the path of dialogue and negotiation with those who support a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM ON THE MIDDLE EAST

Q - Who’s representing France at the World Economic Forum in Sharm el-Sheikh from May 18 to 20?

It’s our ambassador to Egypt, Philippe Coste, who will represent France at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East./.
