1924 CHAMONIX THE FIRST OLYMPIC GAMES IN FRANCE
From 25 January to February 5, 1924, 16 nations and 258 athletes competed in the following events: Norway and Finland dominated, winning 27 out of 43 medals. Finnish athlete Clas Thunberg (speed skating) and Norwegian Thorleif Haug (ski and jump) win 3 gold medals each. Canada won the ice hockey tournament, defeating the USA by a score of 6-1 in the final. The Canadians had previously defeated Switzerland (33-0), Czechoslovakia (30-0) and Sweden (22-0). In conjunction with the Games of the Olympiad in Paris in 1924, it was decided to hold in Chamonix a Winter Sport Week which was later recognized as the first Winter Games at the 25th IOC Session held in Lisbon in May 1926.
