  • 1977: Deputy Mayor of Le Pré Saint-Gervais; elected First Deputy Mayor in June 1995 and Mayor in October 1995

  • 1979: Elected member of Seine-Saint-Denis General Council, re-elected in 1985; Vice-Chairman (1981-1986)

  • June 1981: Elected National Assembly Deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis (National Assembly Secretary); re-elected in 1986, 1988, 1993 and 1997

  • July 1981- March 1992: Member of Ile-de-France Regional Council

  • July 1988: PS National Secretary with responsibility for youth affairs, then for external relations in 1990 and for elections in 1993

  • April 1992: Vice-President of the National Assembly

  • October 1992: Member of the Steering Committee of the Parti socialiste (PS)

  • March 1993: Responsible for social welfare and health issues in the PS
