MICHELE ALLIOT-MARIE
Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs

Born on September 10, 1946 in Villeneuve-le-Roi (Seine-et-Oise)

A barrister by profession, doctor of law and senior lecturer at Paris-I University, Michèle Alliot-Marie also has a master's degree in ethnology.

Elective offices

She was elected an RPR (Rassemblement pour la République) National Assembly Deputy for Pyrénées-Atlantiques in 1986, and re-elected in 1993 and 1995. She was also an MEP from 1989 to 1992, and since then has been Mayor of St Jean-de-Luz.

She sat on the Municipal Council first of Ciboure (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) from 1983 to 1988, and then of Biarritz from 1989 to 1992. She became a member of the General Council in 1994.

Former ministerial offices

Appointed Minister of State with responsibility for Teaching in Jacques Chirac's Government from 1986 to 1988, she returned to government as Minister for Youth and Sport in Edouard Balladur's Government from 1993 to 1995.

Political offices

Michèle Alliot-Marie has held many offices in the RPR.

After serving as national secretary with responsibility for the Civil Service in 1981, she became the RPR's Deputy General-Secretary with responsibility for Foreign Affairs in 1990, has been a member of the political bureau since 1991, and an ex-officio member of the Political Committee since 1998.

Vice-Chairman of the RPR group in the National Assembly since 1998, Michèle Alliot-Marie was elected RPR Chairman in 1999.
